1989 The birth of an idea
The idea of establishing a Hellenic Nuclear Physics Society (HNPS) should be attributed to Professor Michael E. Grypeos from the Aristotle Univ. of Thessaloniki and Dr. Leonidas D. Skouras from NCSR "D". It first occurred when they met in Thessaloniki in early 1989, on the occasion of a Ph.D. thesis defense. Further exchange of views took place during the International Conference on the Spectroscopy of Heavy Nuclei, organized in Agia Pelagia, Crete, on 25 June - 1 July 1989, by J.F. Sharpey-Schaefer from the U. of Liverpool and L.D. Skouras, C.A. Kalfas, S. Kossionides, and A.C. Xenoulis from NCSR "D".
