Who are we?

About us

The Hellenic Nuclear Physics Society (HNPS) is a non-profit organization, which was formed in 1990 and was established formally a year later. We are a society of scientists studying fundamental problems related to the nature of matter, such as nuclear reactions and nuclear structure. We are involved in interdisciplinary studies on nuclear astrophysics and nuclear applications to meet societal needs, including medical diagnoses and environmental issues. We aim at communicating credible scientific information to the public and the State.

Our Annual Symposium has a central role in disseminating our research to the international scientific community and the public.

HNPS History

1989 The birth of an idea

The idea of establishing a Hellenic Nuclear Physics Society (HNPS) should be attributed to Professor Michael E. Grypeos from the Aristotle Univ. of Thessaloniki and Dr. Leonidas D. Skouras from NCSR "D". It first occurred when they met in Thessaloniki in early 1989, on the occasion of a Ph.D. thesis defense. Further exchange of views took place during the International Conference on the Spectroscopy of Heavy Nuclei, organized in Agia Pelagia, Crete, on 25 June - 1 July 1989, by J.F. Sharpey-Schaefer from the U. of Liverpool and L.D. Skouras, C.A. Kalfas, S. Kossionides, and A.C. Xenoulis from NCSR "D".

1990 The first step

These discussions eventually led to the first Hellenic Symposium on Theoretical Nuclear Physics that was held in Thessaloniki on April 24 and 25, 1990, under the coordination of M.E. Grypeos and E. Mavrommatis (UoA) and G.S. Anagnostatos, D. Bonatsos and L.D. Skouras (NCSR "D"). The Symposium was organized by M.E. Grypeos, C. Daskaloyannis, C.G. Koutroulos, S.E. Massen and C.P. Panos and was attended by 19 participants, including C. Syros (U. Patras), G.P. Flessas (U. Aegean), T.S. Kosmas (U. Ioannina), G.A. Lalazissis (U. Tuebingen), J. Sinatkas (NCSR "D"), B. Kargas (TEI Thessaloniki), G. Papadopoulos, Th. Petridou and K. Ypsilantis (AUTh).

1991 Embracing the nuclear science community

During that event, it was decided that the next symposium would be joined by experimentalists and hosted by NCSR "D", with the main goal to establish the Hellenic Nuclear Physics Society. Indeed, the 2nd Hellenic Symposium on Nuclear Physics was co-organized by NCSR "D" (G.S. Anagnostatos, D. Bonatsos, C. Kalfas, V. Katselis) and the University of Athens (E. Mavrommatis) on April 12 and 13, 1991. The number of participants raised to 62, including - in addition to people mentioned so far - N. Antoniou, P. Ioannou, A. Panagiotou and M. Vassiliou (UoA), E. Gazis, C. Papadopoulos and R. Vlastou (NTUA), C. Panos (TEI Piraeus), P. Misaelides (AUTh), A. Pakou (U. Ioannina), A. Katsanos (TU Crete), P. Van Isacker (Daresbury) and X. Aslanoglou, S. Harissopulos, A. Karydas, Ch. Kouris, G. Papaioannou, N. Fotiadis and Th. Paradellis (NCSR "D").

1991 The first constitution

During the 2nd Symposium, the bylaws of the HNPS were drafted and signed by the founding members namely, G.S. Anagnostatos, X. Aslanoglou, D. Bonatsos, G. Doukelis, S. Dritsa, S. Harissopulos, C.A. Kalfas, V. Katselis, E. Kossionides, Th. Paradellis, M. Pilakouta, L.D. Skouras and A.C. Xenoulis (NCSR "Demokritos"), C. Daskaloyannis, M. Grypeos, C.G. Koutroulos, G.A. Lalazissis, S.E. Massen and P. Misaelides (AUTh), C.T. Papadopoulos and R. Vlastou (NTUA), C. Panos (TEI Piraeus) and C. Syros (U. Patras). Following notary approval, the statutes of the HNPS were deposited to the Athens Court of First Instance and the first Governing Board elections were scheduled for the upcoming Symposium.

1992-2018 Growing Up

The 3rd Symposium took place on May 25 and 26, 1992 at the National Technical U. of Athens. It was organized by R. Vlastou, C.T. Papadopoulos and E. N. Gazis, attracting more than 80 participants from the field of low- and intermediate-energy Nuclear Physics. The Governing Board elections were held on May 25, 1992 and the first Board was served by G.S. Anagnostatos (NCSR "D", president), M.E. Grypeos (AUTh, vice president), C.N. Papanicolas (UoA, secretary), C.A. Kalfas (NCSR "D", treasurer) and P. Assimakopoulos (U. Ioannina, member). For the following year, the Board members rotated to M.E. Grypeos (president), G.S. Anagnostatos (vice president), C.A. Kalfas (secretary), C.N. Papanicolas (treasurer) and P.A. Assimakopoulos (member). From that point on, several more Symposia will follow, taking place on an annual basis (with only a couple of exceptional leaps).

2018 A new era

HNPS has continued to grow through the next two decades. A new generation of nuclear scientists has emerged in the crossing of the millenia. The change of Greek legislation and the evolution of the HNPS growth was marked in the change of constitution in 2018 and its name. In 2018, HNPS has added Applications in its greek title ("Ελληνική Εταιρεία Πυρηνικής Φυσικής και Εφαρμογών") to embrace several prominent scientists and recognize their contributions in the field of nuclear physics applications (environment, energy, health, technology, waste management etc).

Our Proceedings

HNPS Advances in Nuclear Physics

Each HNPS Symposium is accompanied by a printed Proceedings Volume. The Series is entitled "HNPS Advances in Nuclear Physics" (ISSN 2654-007X print, 2654-0088 online) and is currently in its 27th volume. In 2017, HNPS has signed a MoU with the National Documentation Center (http://www.ekt.gr) to increase the Society's online presence and disseminate the research results through EKT's open source platform eProceedings.

At the moment, EKT has taken over the responsibility to digitize all printed volumes. Recent volumes (2012-2018) are currently archived here.
